Several stakeholders drawn from different media houses in Western and Nyanza regions have converged at Ciala Resort in Kisumu to gain a clear understanding of the 2024 programming code that was recently amended to ensure that the audience/listeners are protected in terms of content delivery, their interests as well as other on-air activities.
The two-day meeting, scheduled for June 19-20, 2024, has been convened by the Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK) in conjunction with other media regulators, including the Media Council of Kenya. The main objective of the meeting is to equip broadcasters with an in-depth understanding of the code so as to ensure compliance.
The stakeholders attending the meeting include representatives from various media houses, including radio and television stations, online platforms, and print media. They will engage in discussions and presentations aimed at clarifying the amended code and its implications on their daily operations.
The Communication Authority of Kenya has identified several key areas of concern that require attention, including the protection of children and vulnerable groups from harmful content, prevention of hate speech and misinformation, and promotion of ethical journalism practices. The authority also wants to ensure that broadcasters adhere to the code’s provisions on advertising, programming standards, and community service obligations.
During the meeting, stakeholders will also discuss ways to address emerging trends and challenges in the media industry, including the rise of social media and online content. This will enable them to develop strategies for effective regulation and self-regulation.
The amended programming code is a significant development in the media landscape in Kenya, as it provides a framework for ensuring that media content is responsible, respectful, and reflective of the country’s diverse interests. By equipping broadcasters with a deeper understanding of the code, CAK aims to promote a culture of accountability and transparency in the media industry.
Ultimately, the meeting is expected to lead to improved compliance with the code and enhanced protection for audiences across Western and Nyanza regions. It will also provide a platform for stakeholders to share best practices and experiences in promoting responsible media practices
