Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology has been selected as one of the centres of the Standard Chartered Marathon. It will be among centres identified globally to host the 18th edition of the marathon which has now adopted a hybrid format due to Covid 19 pandemic.

According to Standard Chartered Bank Chief Executive Officer Kariuki Ngari, the virtual marathon will be held between 25th and 31st October 2021 while the physical race will be held on October 31st in Nairobi.

Ngari was said this while addressing final year students at the institution during a forum on mentoring tomorrow’s leaders which was broadcast live via social media platforms across the globe. He said that participants will contribute Sh. 1,000 which will go towards their future makers program, a mentorship program for students to prepare them to be ready for the job market focusing on employability, entrepreneurship and education.

Ngari said as they will be preparing students on how to get jobs, they will also be preparing them on how to succeed when they venture into entrepreneurship. He advised the final year students to embrace honesty, a virtue that will make them successful both in the job market and as entrepreneurs. He also challenged each student to identify a mentor, whom they can turn to whenever they are stuck.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC), in charge of Planning, Research and Innovation at the institution Professor Charles Mutai lauded the bank for selecting Masinde Muliro University as one of the centers to host the virtual race. He said the university and the bank share a common interest.

The DVC said the University through the two departments of Optometry and Paramedics will work closely with the bank in giving back to the community.
