Cases of rape involving both female and male victims have surged in Shinyalu Constituency, Kakamega County. This worrying pattern has prompted urgent calls for vigilance and immediate reporting to the Kenya Children’s Welfare Society by affected parents and guardians.

The call for vigilance has been directed particularly towards residents of Handidi and its surrounding areas. Parents and guardians are being implored to educate and protect their children, ensuring their safety until they reach the age of 18.

Ochieng Zablon, Director of the Kenya Children’s Welfare Society Kakamega, addressing the residents of Handidi, emphasized the importance of safeguarding young boys from being coerced into early marriages. This practice, illegal and harmful, has been a growing concern in the area.

He also highlighted the necessity of preventing male children from engaging in marital activities with underage girls, which contravenes the law and disrupts their education and future prospects.

“Parents must be vigilant and protect their boys from being misled into early marriages. This practice is not only illegal but also detrimental to their development,” Zablon stated.

He further stressed that boys, like girls, need protection and guidance to ensure they grow up in a safe and supportive environment.

The authorities have also urged parents to pay closer attention to their children’s academic progress and overall well-being. Regular monitoring and involvement in their school activities can help identify any signs of abuse or distress early on.

“Parents should actively engage with their children’s education and be aware of their progress. This vigilance is crucial in identifying any issues that may arise and addressing them promptly,” Zablon added.

The Kenya Children’s Welfare Society has been identified as the primary body for reporting cases of child abuse. Parents are being encouraged to come forward and report any incidents to ensure that justice is served and the affected children receive the necessary support and care.

Local leaders and organizations are being called upon to conduct awareness campaigns and workshops to educate residents about the importance of child protection and the legal ramifications of engaging in or condoning abusive practices.
