Sabala Inyeni, the Secretary of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Vihiga County branch, has urged President William Ruto to appoint a new Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) to revitalize the ministry. Inyeni claimed that the previous CS, Ezekiel Machogu, lacked the skills and expertise to lead the ministry and had presided over the decline of the education sector.

According to Inyeni, Machogu’s tenure was marked by poor leadership, which has led to a decline in the quality of education in the country. Inyeni alleged that Machogu failed to implement the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) effectively, resulting in poor performance by students.

Inyeni further accused Machogu of mismanaging the ministry, citing instances of corruption and nepotism. He claimed that Machogu created an environment that favored certain individuals and groups, rather than promoting meritocracy.

Inyeni urged President Ruto to take immediate action and appoint a new Education CS who has the right skills and expertise to lead the ministry. He expressed hope that a new CS can restore sanity to the education sector and put it back on track.

The Kuppet official’s sentiments were echoed by other stakeholders who have also called for a new Education CS. They argued that Machogu’s tenure was marked by poor communication, lack of transparency, and failure to engage with stakeholders.

The fate of the education sector hangs in the balance as President Ruto considers whether to heed the calls for a new Education CS. A decision to appoint a new CS could have far-reaching implications for the education sector, which is crucial for Kenya’s development.
