In an effort to combat the alarming rates of maternal and newborn mortality in Kenya, Access to Medicines Platform, a non-governmental organization (NGO), is working tirelessly to improve access to medicine and medical supplies in five counties. Led by CEO Dorothy Okemo, the organization is dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of women, girls, and vulnerable communities.

Okemo explained that Access to Medicines Platform has been collaborating with reproductive health coordinators and sub-county reproductive health coordinators to identify the root causes of maternal mortality and newborn mortality in Vihiga, Kakamega, Homa Bay, Siaya, and Kisumu counties. The data collected has revealed that many women are still dying from preventable causes such as postpartum hemorrhage and high blood pressure during pregnancy.

Okemo emphasized the importance of community engagement and education in reducing maternal mortality and newborn mortality rates. She noted that many women are still unaware of the risks associated with pregnancy and childbirth, and that community-level interventions are essential in raising awareness and promoting healthy behaviors.

Dr. Leah Okiri, an obstetrician-gynecologist from Kisumu County, shared findings from a recent survey conducted by Access to Medicines Platform. The survey revealed that while there have been some improvements in maternal mortality rates in Kisumu County, there is still much work to be done. Dr. Okiri emphasized the need for continued advocacy and support to end preventable maternal deaths.

The discussion highlighted the importance of collaboration between healthcare providers, government officials, and community members in addressing maternal mortality and newborn mortality rates. It also emphasized the need for more funding and resources to support reproductive health programs and address resource gaps in many counties.

Okemo underscored the urgent need for more funding to support reproductive health programs and address resource gaps in many counties. She called on stakeholders to come together to provide the necessary resources to save lives and promote the health and well-being of women and girls in Kenya.
