The Director General of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Mr. George Njao has issued a press release on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 in the aftermath of a horrific accident on the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway involving a matatu owned by Northways Sacco and a foreign bus belonging to Classic Kings of Congo.

The tragic incident claimed 15 lives and left several others injured, prompting a stern call for motorists to exercise extra caution on the roads, particularly with schools reopening.

“To this end, we urge all motorists to be extra cautious on the road, especially now, as children go back to school,” the NTSA press release emphasized.

Highlighting the seriousness of the issue, the NTSA disclosed ongoing, intensified multi-agency operations aimed at curbing violations of traffic rules.

The collaborative effort involves various law enforcement agencies working in tandem to enforce adherence to road safety regulations and hold accountable those who flout them.

In a comparative analysis and statistical trends for 2023 and 2024 as of January 7th by the NTSA, the data revealed a troubling 16.7% variance in the number of fatalities between the two years, with a summary of 84 lives lost in 2024 due to road accidents.

In the Statement, the Director General consoled families of the victims of the Eldoret- Nakuru Highway Crash and assured on the commence of investigations leading to the road accident.
