President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed IEBC and TSC commissioners following their approval by MPs yesterday. This paves way for the swearing-in of the four IEBC commissioners – Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, Irene Masit and Justus Abonyo.
They will serve as commissioners of the electoral agency for a period of six years. Cherera, Wanderi, Masit and Abonyo will replace Roselyn Akombe, Margaret Mwachanya, Paul Kurgat, and former vice-chair Consolata Maina who resigned from the commission in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
The Head of State has also appointed five commissioners to the Teachers Service Commission, ending a quorum hitch that has marred the regulatory body. Nicodemus Anyang, Christine Kahindi, Sharon Chelagat, Anceta Wafukho and Salesa Adano will serve TSC for a period of six years.
Last month, the Court of Appeal ruled that the commission was not properly constituted, hence had no capacity to make major decisions such as involving a General Election. Following their appointments, the IEBC is now duly constituted.
Members of Parliament were called for a special sitting yesterday to approve the nominees to the IEBC.
