Several days after the President of this country appointed four members of the Opposition Democratic Movement (ODM) party to his cabinet, Rashid Obondo, the Chair of Contractors in Vihiga County, has voiced his dissatisfaction. He has highlighted a lack of fairness in the appointments, expressing concerns that equity has not been taken into account. Obondo’s comments come at a time when the political landscape is particularly sensitive, and the expectations of local leaders are high.

Speaking at the Emuhaya Constituency, Obondo praised Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, a notable leader in the region, for his exemplary leadership qualities. He pointed out that the ministry to which Oparanya has been appointed, overseeing cooperatives and small to medium enterprises, is inadequate given his capabilities. According to Obondo, it is crucial to compare this appointment with those of his ODM counterparts who have received more significant roles in the government.

Obondo also took the opportunity to implore Prime Minister Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi, along with other prominent leaders in Vihiga County, to advocate effectively for the interests of the Vihiga residents. He emphasized the importance of securing key positions within the government to benefit the community. Obondo’s assertion reflects the aspirations of many locals who believe that they should have more influence in governance.

Furthermore, Obondo pointed out that Vihiga County is home to a significant number of educated individuals who are capable of contributing meaningfully to government operations. He urged for greater representation among the educated populace to address the needs and concerns of the community effectively. This call highlights the potential talent pool within the county that remains unutilized in the current government structure.

In addition, Obondo seized the occasion to address another pressing issue—timely payment for contractors by the county government. He called upon Vihiga County Governor Wilberforce Ottichilo to ensure that contractors receive their payments promptly. Delayed payments have often been a challenge for contractors, impacting their operations and ability to deliver services within the community.

Obondo’s remarks resonate with a broader sentiment among the contractors who are eager for better collaboration with the county government. He emphasized the need for partnership between the contractors and the county administration to foster development. Such collaboration is seen as vital for driving economic growth and improving infrastructure within Vihiga County.

The concerns raised by Obondo reflect ongoing discussions about representation and equity in government appointments. It serves as a reminder of the expectations leaders have for their regions in the face of national governance. That being said, Vihiga County’s leaders are increasingly urging the need for appointments that recognize local talent and leadership.

As political dynamics continue to evolve, Obondo’s statement underscores the importance of ensuring that every region has a voice in government decisions. His appeal for equity and timely contractor payments symbolizes a broader call for accountability and responsiveness in governance. The future of Vihiga County and its people may well depend on how these concerns are addressed moving forward.
