INGANDALASIA, Kakamega County, Kenya (July 12, 2026) — Rt. Rev. Joseph Obanyi Sagwe, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega and Apostolic Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret, has challenged young people to reject hooliganism and every form of violence, urging them instead to become ambassadors of peace, love, unity, and hope within their families, the Church, and society.
The Bishop made the appeal while presiding over the Holy Mass and administering the Sacrament of Confirmation to candidates at Our Lady of the Assumption Ingandalasia Parish. The joyous celebration brought together hundreds of faithful, including parents, sponsors, catechists, religious, and parishioners, to witness the candidates receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Reflecting on the responsibility that comes with receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, Bishop Obanyi reminded the newly confirmed that they are called to live courageous Christian lives, defend the faith, and become witnesses of Christ through their words and actions.
Addressing current social concerns, the Bishop expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of hooliganism and violence, particularly in Matungu. He cautioned young people against allowing themselves to be manipulated by individuals seeking to advance selfish political or personal interests through violence and lawlessness.
Instead, he encouraged them to choose the path of peace, dialogue, reconciliation, and respect for the dignity of every human person. He reminded them that genuine strength is demonstrated through love, discipline, and service to others, not through violence or destruction.
Bishop Obanyi also appealed to political leaders to uphold respect for the sanctity of places of worship. He urged them to avoid actions that interrupt or distract the faithful during the celebration of the Holy Mass, emphasizing that the Church is a sacred place where God’s people gather to pray and encounter Christ.
Looking ahead to the 2027 General Election, the Bishop called upon all eligible Christians to exercise their civic responsibility with wisdom and discernment. He encouraged voters to prayerfully evaluate candidates based on their integrity, honesty, competence, and commitment to serving the common good rather than being influenced by tribalism, violence, or empty political promises.
He reminded the faithful that participation in elections is both a civic duty and a moral responsibility, urging them to contribute to building a peaceful, just, and united Kenya through responsible citizenship.
Congratulating the newly confirmed candidates, Bishop Obanyi encouraged them to remain rooted in prayer, actively participate in the sacramental life of the Church, and allow the gifts of the Holy Spirit to shape their daily lives. He urged them to become faithful disciples of Christ who radiate hope, compassion, and Christian values wherever they live, study, and work.
The celebration concluded with prayers for peace in the country, the well-being of families, and God’s guidance for Kenya as the nation prepares for the next General Election.
