Seven people have been confirmed dead while seven others are nursing injuries in hospital following a deadly accident at Mukhonje trading centre in Lugari Sub-county. Western Kenya police commander Elsha Odhiambo has confirmed that six at Webuye Hospital and one at Lumakanda County hospital are nursing severe injuries.
The police boss added that three buildings housing 10 shops were consumed in a fire that erupted from the accident along the Eldoret-Webuye highway. According to a witness, the driver of a oil tanker lost control after the brakes failed, eventually hitting a packed matatu and a diesel track which then smashed a transformer. Some who narrowly survived the tragedy, including a local tutor, have taken to social media to express their luck.
Mukhonje market is amongst the many known hot spots due to its terrain and the residents have appealed to the Kenya National Highways Authority to make efforts and find long lasting solution to accidents in the area. The incident comes just days after an accident involving four vehicles left several people dead and others injured a few kilometers away from Mukhuyu market.
