Residents living along Kuvasali hills in Malava, Kakamega County have been cautioned about the potential for a landslide due to the ongoing heavy rains. There are concerns that the soil in the area may become saturated and weakened, leading to a possible mudslide and the movement of large rocks downhill.Area administrator
Walter Namutali has advised the community to remain vigilant and prepared to evacuate if necessary. In 2007, a significant landslide in the area resulted in the loss of 8 lives and injuries to around 56 individuals. While some residents were relocated following the incident, it is reported that some have returned to reside on the hills, putting them at risk of being affected by any future landslides.
The country has been experiencing heavy rains, leading to deaths and damage to property in various regions. Travel has been disrupted, and schools have been closed indefinitely at the president’s directive.
